Getting a big table together is one of life's genuine pleasures, and one of its quiet stresses. Whether it is a birthday, a work do, a reunion with friends who have scattered across the country, or just an excuse to eat something brilliant, a large group meal needs a little planning to feel effortless on the night.
We have hosted plenty of big tables here at 10 Bedford Place, and the ones that run smoothest all have a few things sorted in advance. Here is what we would tell a friend before they booked.
Lock in your numbers (roughly) early
The single most useful thing you can do is give a venue a sensible head count as soon as you have one. It does not need to be exact. A rough range, say 12 to 16, tells us how to set the room, how many servers to put on, and whether your group fits best at one long table or a cluster.
Numbers always wobble. Someone's babysitter falls through, a couple more want to come, work shifts change. That is completely normal. Just keep us posted as things firm up, and confirm final figures a few days before so the kitchen can prep properly.
When to book
For weekday evenings a week or two ahead is usually comfortable. Friday and Saturday nights, and anything around Christmas, book up fast, so the earlier the better. If your date is fixed, treat the booking as the first thing you do, not the last.
Decide how you want to eat
Large groups work best when the format matches the mood. There are really three ways to do it, and none of them is wrong.
Order from the menu
Everyone picks their own from the full menu. This is the relaxed option and it suits most birthday and friends' dinners. Our 24-hour marinated piri piri chicken, racks of ribs, handmade burgers, wings and seafood all hold up beautifully at a big table, and there is plenty to keep vegetarians and lighter eaters happy too.
Sharing platters down the middle
For a celebratory, generous feel, sharing boards piled with chicken, ribs and sides are hard to beat. Food arrives in the middle, people help themselves, and the whole table loosens up. It gets conversation flowing in a way that individual plates sometimes do not.
A set menu or buffet
For bigger numbers, or when you want the cost agreed up front, a pre-arranged menu or buffet keeps things simple. It speeds up service, removes any awkwardness around splitting the bill, and means no one is left waiting while twenty orders are taken one by one. If that appeals, have a look at our group dining options and we will help you shape something.
Key takeaway: Agree your rough numbers, your eating format and any dietary needs before the day, and a large group meal becomes genuinely easy on the night.
Flag dietary needs in advance
There is almost always someone in a big group with a requirement, whether that is gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian, vegan or a specific allergy. Tell us when you book, not when you arrive. It means we can advise properly, prep safely, and make sure that person has something they are actually excited to eat rather than a reluctant side salad.
Piri piri cooking is naturally friendly here. Grilled chicken, plenty of vegetable sides and spice levels from mild to properly fiery give most people room to find their plate.
Think about the bill before the starters
Splitting a bill across fifteen people at 10pm is nobody's idea of fun. Sort the approach early and the end of the night stays cheerful.
Common ways to handle it
- One payer, settle up later. The organiser pays and collects from everyone. Simplest for the restaurant, best when the group trusts the maths.
- Split evenly. Fine when everyone ate and drank roughly the same.
- Set menu per head. Removes the guesswork entirely, which is why larger groups often prefer it.
Whatever you choose, mention it when you book so we can set the tills up to match.
Drinks and the little extras
A good group meal is about more than the food. Our cocktails and offers like Amigo Hour give the evening a lift, and if you are marking something special we can help make it feel that way.
Birthday in the group?
If someone is celebrating, we have a lovely little perk: the birthday guest eats free with 10 paying adults. That is main course only, valid ID needed, and it cannot be combined with other promotions. It is a nice touch that turns a regular dinner into a proper occasion.

Picking the right spot in the room
Large groups have a different energy to a quiet table for two, and that is a good thing. Tell us what you are after. A long lively table in the thick of it, or something a bit more tucked away so your group can talk freely. We will seat you to suit the occasion and the noise level you want.
If your group is on the larger side or you want the space to yourselves, we also have a function room for private hire, which is handy for anything from a milestone birthday to a team celebration.
A quick checklist before you book
- Date and a rough head count
- Rough timing for arrival and when you want to be done
- Eating format: menu, sharing or set menu
- Any dietary needs or allergies
- How you want to handle the bill
- Any birthday or celebration we should know about
Get those six things down and the rest falls into place. We will take care of the cooking, the pacing and the atmosphere.
Come and eat with us
We love a full table. The chatter, the charcoal smell drifting from the grill, platters going down the middle and everyone reaching in. If you are planning a large group meal in Southampton, we would be glad to make it an easy, delicious one.
